Another ridiculous blanket statement.

Yes, it happens, but it is not universal, or even the norm.

Read any of the studies on millionaires in America. Few of them started as such. Count me as not an isolated data point, but rather a rather representative example.

Consider also the study I referenced earlier which shows that within five years of college graduation, the stateis, have largely caught up with the ivies in their success rates. Getting into Harvard is cool at the time, really cool when you get your first job interview, but highly overrated over the long term.

It's amazing how focused people are on *****ing about a few privileged, when we are all quite privileged. It's equally sad how so many choose not to take advantage of the privilege of living in such a land and would rather use visions of wealthy boogeymen as a scapegoat for their failure to do so.l

I think some tax evasion is also part of this scandal.

It appears to me that the only Ivy caught up in this is Yale.

What I find interesting is that some CA residents are paying extra to get into UCLA. I thought instate students have lower requirements to get accepted than out of state students. If so, then the kids of this family is really dumb.

Re: Anyone following the college scandal?

Maybe I am old school. I had work my ass off to get into university. I had to work my ass off in university. I cannot understand pushing a kid into school for what? Your ego? TBH, in my neck of the woods, the people with 4 yr degrees aren't doing half as well as people who have taken up a trade. Plumbers, Electricians, etc. etc. I guess at a certain income level, it would be anathema for your kid to get their hands dirty. (a good friend is an MBA, has degrees up the wazoo, encouraged his son to become an Electrician. The kid pulls down more than his old man) I handle several electricians whose annual income is rather impressive. Same with plumbers I have handled. There ain't enough jobs on Wall Street or Silicon Valley, and buying a place for a student that does not have the credentials or the want of an education, and therefore denying a place for a student that would be both qualified, and desirous of an education is frankly criminal.

It depends on the school. Some state schools are very hard to get in to., especially if you're from a part of the state that is already overrepresented in the school.

Also, state schools want to see a certain percentage of out of state/international students, ostensibly for diversity purposes, but they also like getting the extra tuition.

That was a study done by the late Alan Krueger, Princeton professor and staunch liberal. Great that you can reference him, he took his life the other day.

Re: Anyone following the college scandal?

The part about ivy league vs ho hum schools is accurate up to a point. If you have aspirations for teaching, for example, or investment banking, or high law, etc, Podunk State won't cut it.

It's beginning to look like that for coveted residency spots in medicine, too.

The awesome thing: Federal prosecutors would appear to be charging 50 people with crimes like conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud that could result in multiyear prison sentences.

So, looks like this time these rich and privileged will not get off with fines.

Re: Anyone following the college scandal?

My question is, so these people get their mediocre kids into these top schools, do they do well? Or do they flunk out? Does the school just pass them along and let them graduate? The one daughter of Lori Loughlin posted on Instagram that she didn’t care about school but was looking forward to parties.

When my friends daughter goofed off the first semester of college, the school came down hard and threatened to kick her out. Luckily she got her act together. Does the same thing happen to these rich kids?

There was an article in the NYT last Wednesday. Reporters asked fellow students if they thought their privileged classmates got there based on who their parents were or on their merit... the best response “no duh, what do you think?”

... and if course those who buy that without question absolutely refuse to accept that some other less than qualified students gain admission in part by virtue of their minority or underprivileged status.

Same sheeple, just on the other side of the fence.

Same thing could be applied to legacy students. So, again I still don’t get the prestige of the universities. I believe more than these parents should pay the price, these universities should lose some level of accreditation.
