Re: Who's Ready for Some Football?
My sons varsity team:
They were playing lackluster all first half, we were trailing 14-7 at halftime. First drive of the second half we were driving the ball and our running back fumbles, the opposing team picks it up for an 80+ TD. Now we are down 21-7 and not looking good. With four minutes left in the third, my son caught a short three and out, puts a move on the defender and scampers in for six. We are down seven.
For most of fourth quarter both defenses made key plays. A punt to my son, and he runs it out to our 40, but a spot penalty puts us all the way back to our five yard line. So, we are down by seven points, there is 2:25 left on the clock and we are 95 yards away from a tie (two timeouts). We run a no-huddle quick offense and move the ball to the 22 yard line. A screen pass, to my son, he gets a great block from the WR, makes two juke moves takes off, turning on the afterburners with three defenders trailing. He scores and we are all tied up with 1:22 left on the clock. We kickoff and they get a great return with our poor tackling they are out to their own 45. They try to catch us off guard by running a draw play, they lose three. Quick back to the line, they run a screen. QB throws it low, bounces out of the receivers hand right into one of our LBs hands. Now, 52 seconds and we have about 40 yards to go for a win. No-huddle and some short passes and a roughing the passer penalty gets us down to the their nine yard line. We have 21 seconds with a first down and nine yards to win. First play and everyone is covered and QB throws it away. We now have 2nd down, 14 seconds and one timeout. Next play and our QB draws them offside. We are on the four yard line and we send out the field goal unit. It is on left hash mark and a difficult angle for our kicker. We call our final timeout and decide to go for it. First play goes nowhere (incomplete pass). Not many ticks left, QB connects with the WR in the corner of the end zone. Only four seconds left, we squib kick to one of their line guys who runs for about two yards before being brought down and 0:00 on the clock.
We came back from seven down with 2:25 to win by seven.
