Re: Sister Kept in Cage

The poverty depicted is jarring. I bet this woman has never even finished high school. I feel sorry for the son but that's nice who stood up for his mother.

She is probably getting SSI or some kind of social security for her disabilities, too.

From the little bit said, she had meningitis as a young child. That's an infection in her brain. She cannot talk. She drinks out of a baby bottle. She's clearly mentally disabled. So year, she probably never did finish school. A lot of youngsters with brain damage are unable to attend school.

SSI is about $700 a month. It's not much at all.

I don't know if she would be eligible for SSD, which is more than that. But since she has apparently never held a job, she most likely is not.

She should be eligible for SSI, SNAP, welfare type income assistance, and Medicaid. There might be other things as well.

I just read some online info about Medicaid assistance for long term care in Pennsylvania and it looks like she'd be eligible for that too.

The info provided is too sparse to really know what was going on. I'm holding out on forming an opinion until more info is provided. For example I would like to see some photos of the 'wooden cage'.

What I have seen in some cases is that the family is not aware of the social programs and assistance that is available for the disabled. So they try to handle it all themselves and get overwhelmed.

I wonder what got the police to check out the house and check on the disable sister to start with. That's not addressed in the articles I've seen.

On the surface it sounds horrible.

Did you find another article that goes into this some more.

My bet is that there is more to the story and it's not exactly as is being reported at this time.
I think the same thing.

I haven't looked. See what they are saying in a few days.

It is horrible, even if she had no clue what to do. And that seems completely unbelievable. They must also be getting section 8 which will help pay for rent.

I'm guessing it was a four sided plywood enclosure on a pallet, similar to a playpen with no top. It's likely one end opened. I understand feeling sorry for someone who has to take care of a family member who is that disabled. It must be hell. I'm thinking she wanted the income and food stamps. It's likely she got some free taxi service or some kind of transportation, as well.

Agree. Don't like their insinuations behind it either.

Yea, it's easy to imagine all sorts of stuff. But we don't know what was gong on. I really dislike news stories that give only the least amount of info.

It's also possible that the disabled sister had no SSI, no Medicaid and no other assistance. Sometimes family members don't even know these things are available. I have helped some people who are in this situation, who are taking care of a disable person, or even disabled themselves. They have no idea what's available. I'm no expert on the topic but was able to search the web and find out what's out there for them. Then I helped them fill out the paperwork and get the benefits they qualified for.

Either the care-taker sister is a monster, or she's someone who is just clueless.

What amazes me is that no one looked into the situation earlier. How many years has this been going on?

I don't know, but I would imagine many years. This disabled woman had an infection, urinary, I think, and it wasn't attended to for so long, she was losing muscle mass from her body trying to fight it.

The son obviously knew and thought it wasn't a big deal.

Isn't eligibility for SNAP based whether one is working or not?

That was a mistake was watching something else before.

I would however like to know if the care facility is private. Most people who are in that kind of shape HAVE to have a nurse come around ever so often, and if so those conditions should have been caught before that. May not have been in this case however.

What bothers me are the new private guardianship firms cropping up, news stories like this remind me of.

There is a website created by those who have had their loved ones kidnapped by the system and all there property sold.

Here's you a few stories. Going on all over the nation, especially those who have assets.
I think I posted a warning here a year ago.

I've seen exposes on TV about them. they are scary. But the irony is that those outfits wouldn't waste their time with this family.

Some people who work can get SNAP even if they have a job, if their income is low enough.

The disabled woman in this situation was not working and is clearly very disabled so she would be eligible.

It’s heart breaking.
I agree in most cases such as this. I don’t put anything past much.

Maybe Pennsylvania is different. Usually it’s a D. A. Who would handle such.

Perhaps the AG has greater political ambitions and need to appeal to the poorer population as an advocate willing to crack the

Just thinking out loud so to speak.
