Re: NYE Music for the TAM Surfer
Tonight, a short story.
I went outside to sit on the porch for a few minutes. I saw a girl standing on the sidewalk in front of my apartment. There was a young man with her, not too far away. I wondered what was going on and sat down.
I then heard my neighbors talking. A woman in her thirties walked away from their porch. She walked over toward my apartment carrying a box with something in it.
Her daughter came down with her.
In a moment, they asked if I wanted to buy a candy bar from their box. They had a few different types in there. One was peanut butter cups. Another was chocolate covered wafers. There was strawberry licorice. There were other assorted candy bars I wasn't interested in.
I asked why she was selling them. I expected her to tell me that her daughter was in the girl scouts or some other organization. She didn't.
She told me she needed to make some money. She said she needed to buy a car. She found one for $150.00 that she thought she could use for a little while. I went a dug up $2.00 and paid her for a candy bar.
When I got the money, I got a dollar bill and some change. I counted the change and had a nickel extra. I gave that to the girl and asked her to count it. She did and said there was an extra 5 cents and looked at her mother. I gave her the dollar and her mother said, "Well, give him his change". The girl handed me the nickel and I thanked her.
I thought it was a good test to see if their little story was honest.
Did I do the right thing? Were they being honest? I don't know. I don't know where they got the candy. I figure they probably got it on sale and are making a little on it's sale.
My neighbors bought some, too.
What do you think?
